Pharmaceutical form
Solution for injection.
Clear colorless solution.
Composition
Ketamine (as ketamine hydrochloride) 50 mg
Indication
Management of short-term anesthesia in target species as monoanesthesia or in combination with tranquilizers, injectable or inhalation anesthetics for most moderate and more demanding procedures.
Target animals
Horses, calves, sheep, goats, dogs, cats, mice, rats and guinea pigs.
Dosage and application
It depends on the species of animal, the route of administration and the required depth of anesthesia. The action of ketamine can be prolonged in all domestic animals by reacting 1/3 to 1/2 of the initial dose at the time of the first signs of awakening. Atropine is recommended to reduce salivation.
Horses: intravenous administration.
Calves, sheep, goats, cats: intramuscular administration.
Dogs: intramuscular or intravenous administration.
Mice, rats: intraperitoneal administration.
Guinea pigs: intraperitoneal or intramuscular administration
Horse
Only in combination with tranquilizers. The most used combinations for very short operations on a lying patient.
Xylazine 1.1 mg/kg b.w. slowly intravenously, after the onset of severe sedation, ketamine is administered at a dose of 2.2 mg/kg bw for 2 minutes, rapidly intravenously. Spontaneous lying down (forced handcuffing is contraindicated) occurs in 45 seconds to 3 minutes. The duration varies considerably from 4 to 30 minutes individually.
Calf, sheep, goat
Atropine 0.1-0.2 mg/kg b.w. intramuscularly, in 10–15 minutes 10 mg/kg b.w. ketamine intramuscularly.
Dog
Ketamine in combination with xylazine is the most common method of general anesthesia in dogs.
General dosage:
Atropine 0.05 mg / kg b.w. + xylazine 1-2 mg/kg b.w. + ketamine 10–20 mg/kg b.w. simultaneously or sequentially intramuscularly. In brachycephalic, heavier, elderly and worsened patients, doses are selected at the lower limit. Anesthesia begins 5-10 minutes and lasts 20-30 minutes. In larger and large breeds of dogs: atropine 0.05 mg/kg b.w. + xylazine 1–1.5 mg/kg b.w. at the same time intramuscularly. After 5-10 minutes, slowly intravenously with ketamine at a dose of 2 mg/kg b.w. Anesthesia begins after completion of the ketamine injection and lasts 10-15 minutes.
Cat
For sedation 5–10 mg ketamine/kg b.w. for painless examinations and treatments. For general anesthesia 20–25 mg ketamine/kg. ž.hm. intramuscularly. In 5-10 minutes, marked analgesia begins, lasting 20-40 minutes. Only for procedures that do not require relaxation. The following procedure is recommended to reduce the percentage of ketamine side effects and to achieve relaxation: atropine 0.05 mg/kg b.w. + xylazine 0.5 mg / kg b.w. subcutaneously (possibly diazepam 0.25-0.5 mg/kg bw intramuscularly). In 15-20 minutes ketamine 10-15 mg/kg b.w. intramuscularly.
Mouse
125-200 mg ketamine/kg b.w. intraperitoneally.
Rat
80-130 mg ketamine/kg b.w. intraperitoneally.
Guinea pig
100-200 mg ketamine/kg b.w. (in combination with xylazine 25-100 mg/kg bw) intraperitoneally or intramuscularly.
